The main aim of this course is to teach the students how to comprehend subtle and deep meanings while reading or listening in Turkish; to establish the consciousness of Turkish as one of the richest, the most creative and fundamental languages; to feel an affection toward the language; to have pleasure in reading, to have good reading habits and develop reading abilities, and also to teach fundamental cultural values of the Turkish people; in short to develop and increase thinking, writing and communication abilities of the students as individuals.



1 To perceive, define and exemplify the rules of Turkish language; and to understand and explain the relation between the language, the idea and the culture;
2 To comprehend and express the structure, the function and the dimension of the language;
3 To understand and comprehend the differences between the oral language and the written text;
4 To be able to analyze the text both to be read and heard;
5 To be able to express the senses, envisions, and observations by using effective words and sentences both orally and in written form;
6 To be able to classify the languages in the world according to their roots and structures;
7 To be able to explain the phonetics of the Turkish language;
8 To be able to apply the basic terms of morphemes;
9 to be able to explain the basic concepts of syntax and semantics;
10 To comprehend and explain different language mistakes in use on the texts;
11 Develop a scientific, analytic, critic, creative and supportive thinking and mind;
12 educating students who claim national and global ethic values as their own; tolerate the opposite ideas in discussions, thinks and creates their ideas about local, national and global problems, and fluently uses Turkish language both orally and in written form while talking on any issues.

1 Comprehending the concept of speech and its aspects.
2 Explaining the methods of idea developing in oral and written speech. (Defining, exemplifying, comparing, and quotation.)
3 Comprehending the genres of speech by providing the examples. (Explanatory speech, argumentative speech, narrative speech, and descriptive speech.)
4 Subjective and objective speech, direct and indirect speech, simple and figurative speech.
5 Comprehending and discussing the main aspects of the four main activities and genres of language: Listening, speech, reading and writing.
6 Discourse: Comprehending the importance of effective and well constructed discourse; and the main aspects of being a good speaker.
7 Genres of speech: Explaining the genres and aspects of discourse: conference, panel, seminar, forum, debate.
8 Midterm Exam
9 Written narrative: Explaining the phases in writing; the topic choice, narrowing the topic, determining the main and side ideas, and planning.
10 The genres of written narrative-I: Explaining the general aspects of short narratives; article, essay, memoir, biography, autobiography.
11 The genres of written speech-II: Explaining the general aspects of the literary genres; poetry, short story, novel and play. Explaining the development of Turkish poetry.
12 Critique and analysis of contemporary Turkish poetry samples.
13 Explanations on the development of Turkish short story writing and the main aspects of the contemporary Turkish short stories.
14 Critique and analysis of contemporary Turkish short story samples.
15 The genres of written narratives-III: Personal and formal writings; letter, notes, invitation, and petition, and report.
16 Final Exam
