The aim of this course is to provide students with a fundamental understanding of buildings, construction materials, structural systems, and building elements. The course introduces the functions and structural behavior of major building elements and explains how loads are transferred through a building from the superstructure to the foundation and soil. It also aims to develop students’ ability to evaluate basic structural problems and propose appropriate solutions by considering load transfer, material behavior, stability, and structural system principles. Through practical activities and design exercises, students are encouraged to apply theoretical knowledge and develop basic engineering design skills.
Asst. Prof. Dr. Merve KURU ERDEM
| 1 | Explain the fundamental properties, functions, and roles of construction materials, construction components, and building elements within a structural system. |
| 2 | Explain the types of loads acting on buildings and interpret the mechanisms by which these loads are transferred through structural elements. |
| 3 | Evaluate the structural behavior and interactions of building elements such as foundations, columns, beams, slabs, walls, and roofs. |
| 4 | Analyze load paths, structural layouts, and structural continuity in building systems to identify potential structural performance problems. |
| 5 | Develop alternative structural solutions to simple engineering problems by considering the geometric, material, and structural characteristics of building elements. |
| 6 | Create and evaluate basic structural system designs by applying the principles of structural behavior, stability, and load transfer. |
Birinci Öğretim

The course covers basic concepts related to buildings, loads, structural systems, construction methods, construction materials, components, and elements. It examines masonry elements, foundations, reinforced concrete columns and beams, structural arrangement principles, slabs, stairs, doors, windows, and roofs. The course also addresses the functions and structural behavior of these elements, load paths and load-transfer mechanisms, basic foundation selection, and the relationships between different elements within a building system. Practical exercises and design activities are used to reinforce students’ understanding of structural behavior, stability, material behavior, and load transfer.
