General Description

Turkish Language and Literature Department of Ege University, which is one of four department of recent Faculty of Literature established as a Faculty of Social Sciene in 1976, was founded under the presidency of deceased Prof. Dr. Selahattin Olcay. Apart from Prof. Dr. Harun Tolasa, Prof. Dr. Mehmet Akalın, Prof. Dr. Tunca Kortantamer, Dr. Güler Güven, Dr. Fares Hariri who are not with us, Prof. Dr. Fuat Bozkurt, Prof. Dr. Halil Ersoylu, Prof. Dr. Fikret Türkmen, Prof. Dr. Günay Karaağaç, Prof. Dr. Ömer Faruk Huyugüzel, Prof. Dr. Rıza Filizok, Prof.Dr. Şevket Toker, Prof. Dr. Metin Ekici, Prof. Dr. Kamil Veliyev (Azerbaijan), Prof. Dr. Gurbandurdu Geldiyev (Turkmenistan), Prof. Dr. Hayati Develi, Prof. Dr. Nezahat Öztekin, Prof. Dr. Atabey Kılıç, Oya Adalı, Dr. Nazım Muradov, Dr. Mustafa Aksoy, Dr. Ayşen Uslu and Bayram Orak have worked in different kinds of term and different hours of work in the department until today. Also, 37 annual department stil carrying out teching in undergraduate, master and doctorate programs has a national refereed journal which is published by the department.

“Doctor of Philosphy (PhD)” degree in Turkish Language and Literature Department ( first cycle in Turkish Language and Literature Department ) is awarded to the graduates who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum

The applicants who hold a Master`s Degree and willing to enroll in the Doctorate programme may apply to the Directorate of Graduate School with the documents. 1-Sufficient score (at least 55 out of 100) from the Academic Staff and Graduate Study Education Exam (ALES) conducted by Student Selection and Placement Center (OSYM) or GRE Graduate Record Examination (GRE) score or Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) score equivalent to ALES score of 55. 2-English proficiency (at least 70 out of 100 from the Profiency Exam conducted by Ege University Foreign Language Department, or at least 55 out of 100 from ÜDS (University Language Examination conducted by OSYM) or TOEFL or IELTS score equivalent to YDS score of 55. The candidates holding Bachelor`s or Master`s Degree taught totally in English are exempted from English proficiency requirement. The candidates fulfilling the criteria outlined above are invited to interwiev. The assessment for admission to masters programs is based on : 50% of ALES, 15% of academic success in the undergraduate programme (cumulative grade point average (CGPA) ) 10 % of academic success in the master`s programme and 25% of interview grade. The required minimum interview grade is 60 out of 100. The candidates having an assessed score of 65 at least are accepted into the Doctorate programme. The results of the evaluation are announced by the Directorate of Graduate School.

Successful students who have completed at least one semester in another department of the same institute at the university or in a postgraduate program affiliated with an equivalent institute of another higher education institution may be accepted to postgraduate programs through horizontal transfer. In order for a student's application for horizontal transfer to be accepted, the weighted grade point average of the courses he/she has registered for until the application date must be at least 75, there must be a compatibility between the courses and entrance requirements between the postgraduate education program he/she is currently continuing and the program he/she wants to transfer to, and there must be a faculty member and infrastructure facilities that can undertake thesis advisorship in the relevant department. Students who want to transfer to a postgraduate program of the university must apply to the relevant institute directorate at least three weeks before the start date of the following semester by attaching documents that introduce the education program he/she is continuing and indicate his/her success status in the courses he/she is registered for to his/her petition. The institute director sends the application documents to the relevant department or art department head and requests the opinion of the department and, if this opinion is positive, the names of the courses that the student is required to take in order to adapt to the program. The opinions and suggestions of the department are reviewed by the Institute Board of Directors and a decision is made before the start date of the education whether the student's horizontal transfer request is appropriate or not. The courses taken by the student while enrolled in a graduate program at another university, which will be counted as the minimum course load in case the student later enrolls in a graduate program at the University, are determined with the recommendation of the advisor and the relevant Department Board and the approval of the Institute Board of Directors. In Turkey, the recognition process of non-formal certificate-based or experience-based (in-formal and non-formal) learning outside of formal education institutions is still in its early stages. Therefore, the recognition of prior learning has not been fully initiated in all programs of Ege University.

The duration of the Doctoral Program is eight semesters. However, students who have taken some of the courses of the program as special students at the undergraduate level according to Article 8 of the EGE UNIVERSITY GRADUATE EDUCATION-TEACHING REGULATION and have been successful, students who have completed their undergraduate education in the field of science the program is included in, including the preparatory class, at a faculty with a normal duration of more than eight semesters, or students who can complete their thesis in a shorter period, may complete their education in a shorter period with the reasoned proposal of the relevant department and the decision of the Institute Board of Directors. The program consists of at least seven courses, a proficiency exam, thesis proposal, thesis presentation and thesis defense, provided that it is not less than 21 local credits in total. The master's courses consist of compulsory and elective courses. The total ECTS credit of the program is 60. In order for a student to take the exam of a course they are registered for, they must attend that course at least 70% and the practical courses at least 80%. In addition to midterm and final exams, learning activities such as reports, homework, quizzes, seminar presentations and project work can be used in the student's performance evaluation during the semester. In order for the student to be considered successful in the relevant course, this grade must be at least 75 out of 100. The student can re-register for the courses he/she failed or take other graduate courses approved by his/her advisor. In addition, with the recommendation of the advisor and the relevant institute department head and the approval of the Institute's Board of Directors, he/she can choose from courses given in other higher education institutions. The institute specifies how many of the courses taken from other higher education institutions can be counted towards the minimum 21-credit course load, provided that they do not exceed nine credits. The student who successfully completes his/her courses is taken to the proficiency exam. If he/she also passes this exam, he/she presents his/her thesis proposal to the jury. He/she presents his/her thesis progress and results orally to the thesis monitoring committee for six months. Seminar and thesis work are non-credit according to the local credit system and are evaluated as successful or unsuccessful. The student must write the results obtained regarding his/her thesis in accordance with the thesis writing rules of the relevant institute and defend his/her thesis orally before the jury. After the thesis exam is completed, the jury decides on acceptance, rejection or correction by a simple majority. The student whose thesis is decided to be corrected must defend his/her thesis again before the same jury within six months at the latest. If the thesis is not accepted after this defense, the student's registration will be deleted.

Ege University Turkish Language and Literature Department gives education in the department branches of Old Turkic, Old Turkish Literature, Modern Turkish Literature, Modern Turkish Language, Turkic Dialects and Literatures,. After 2 semester of courses, students prepare a thesis based on the information identified in this phase of the program. Objective of course is to raise a qualified individual who has an ability of researching in the fields of Turkic Language, Literature, Folklore and Culture, to make different research and investigations and is to educate contemporary scientists in this fields.

Graduate students have opportunities for working in different kinds of academic fields in universities as "academıcıan". Also, they can find opportunity to work in government foundations like ministry of public education, Ministry of Culture and TRT as well as private institutions in the field of publication and advertisement.

Graduates who succesfully completed doctorate degree may apply to both in the same or related disciplines in higher education institutions at home or abroad to get a position in academic staff or to governmental R&D centres to get expert position.

Students must attend theorical courses, seminars, practices and examinations. Students` attendance is followed by their supervisors. The curriculum contains compulsory and elective courses designed by the department. For all compulsory and elective courses, one midterm examination is performed during each semester. In addition to midterm examinations and other studies, students are required to take a final examination from each course. The final grade of the course is found by adding 40% of the score of the midterm examination, and 60% of the score of the final examination. When the final score equals to, or exceeds 75 in theorical lectures the student is accepted as successful for that course.

In the department, there are 12 academic members and 3 research asistant. There are 3 classrooms for 100 people, 64 people and 108 people. All of these classrooms have a computer and a mirror device; In addition, an interactive (smart) board is available in one of our classrooms. In the department there is also a rich archive-seminarlibrary which is composed of donation books and as well as undergraduate students, especially postgraduate students benefit from this library. also, in 2007 the archive of author and intellectual Hüseyinzade Ali Turan was donated to our department and presented to researchers' interests.

7 The skill of analysing relationships and differences between current writing languages and historical periods of Turkic language on the basis of texts.
8 The skill of analysing linguistic features of Turkish tribes out of Turkey via literary texts of these tribes.
9 The skill of analysing texts which were written with the various alphabets used in the period old Turkic.
10 The skill of analysing other historical and contemporary Turkıc writing languages which its successor with old Turkic as comparing in each level.
