History

The Agricultural Machinery and Technology Engineering Department was established in 1971 and it is a part of the Agricultural Faculty founded in 1955. Department is made up of three sections, namely Agricultural Machinery, Energy in Agriculture and Agricultural Tractor. There are 10 Professors, 2 Associate Professors, 2 Assistant Professor and 3 Research Assistants making a total of 17 academics in the Department. The Agricultural Machinery Department has steadily improved in the areas of academics and education since its establishment.

Qualification Awarded

The Bachelor's Degree in Agricultural Engineering-Agricultural Machinery and Technology Engineering ( first cycle in Agricultural Engineering-Agricultural Machinery and Technology Engineering) is awarded to the graduates who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum including 8 weeks of training period.

Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

The rules and regulations for recognition of formal prior learning are well defined. Transfer can be made among the institutions of which equivalency is recognized by Higher Education Council. Also successful vocational school graduates to continue their educaiton to obtain Bachelor’s degrees if they are successful in the selection and the placement examination (DGS, i.e. vertical transfer examination) are admitted. The courses to be taken by these students are determined by the relevant department, on the basis of courses they have completed in the programs from which they have graduated. Recognition of prior non-formal and in-formal learning is at the beginning stage in Turkish Higher Education Institutions. Ege University and hence of the Department is not an exception to this. However, exams of exemption are organised at the start of each year at the University for the courses of English Language and Computer Skills. The students who have completed the proficiencies for these courses on his/her own or through other means, and believe that they have achieved the learning outcomes specified are given the right to take the exemption exam. The students who achieve a passing grade from these exams are held exempt from the related course in the curriculum.

Students must obtain a grade point average of at least 2.00 out of 4.00 and successfully pass all courses on the programme (equivalent to a total of 240 ECTS).

Profile of The Programme

The Agricultural Machinery and Technology Engineering Program has been designed to provide the fundamentals of design, construction, development, management, planning and use of Agricultural Machinery. The first year of curriculum mainly consists of physics, chemistry, mathematics, computing , basic engineering and technical communication and strategies in problem solving courses, to bring the knowledge level of students with different backgrounds to the same level. The required courses offered in second, third, and fourth years include Basic Agricultural Machinery Calculations, Unit Operations, Thermodynamics, Agricultural Mechanization, Agricultural Tractors, Mechanical Technology, Machine Components, Machinery of Livestock Husbandry, Soil Tillage Machines and a Diploma Project.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples

The graduates of the Bachelor's programme in Agricultural Machinery Department have opportunities of employment in a variety of state and private funded companies. The main state companies where they can work are machinery and related engineering departments of academic instutions as academic staff, and governmental bodies and enterprises as engineer. Agricultural Engineers holding a Agricultural Machinery Bachelor's Degree play a key role in industries.

Access to Further Studies

The graduates holding Bachelor’s Degree are eligible to apply to Master’s Degree programmes at national level and /or international level both in the same and in related disciplines.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Students are required to take a mid-term examination and/or complete other assigned projects/homework during the semester and, additionally, are required to take a final examination and/or complete a final project for course evaluation.The assessment for each course is described in detail in “Individual Course Description”. Students must attend classes, practices and examinations. Students' attendance is followed by the Instructor concerned. For almost all required and technical elective courses there are written examinations, in which most cases student must solve selected problems by calculation. One midterm examination is given during each semester. Dates of midterm examinations are announced by the Department in the first month of the semester. In addition to midterm examinations and other work, students are required to take a final examination. Final examinations are held at the appropriate place and hour as decided and announced by the Department. Students are given a make-up examination for any examination which they have not attended if it is accepted by the Faculty Administrative Comittee that there exist genuine and valid reasons for this. The semester grades are determined by adding fourty percent of the midterm exam and sixty percent of the final exam grade. The type and contribution of the educational activities such as reports, homeworks, quizzes, seminar presentations or individual oral discussions, and performance in laboratory work on the assessment are announced by the instructor at the beginning of the semester. In the new assessment system which has been introduced since the academic year of 2004-2005, the semester grades are assessed through Relative Assessment System. The success states of the students are specified by Grade Point Averages (GPA) and Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) computed at the end of each term. (GPA) is the weighted grade average of the term the student is enrolled in. CGPA is the weighted grade average of the students computed by considering all the courses in the course plan of the enrolled department or program starting from the entrance to the university. (GPA) and (CGPA) are computed with the weighted grade averages. Weighted grade average is obtained by dividing the sum of the product of course credits and the weight coefficients equivalent of the letter grades to the total credit. Both (GPA) and CGPA are determined by adding all the grades students get from credit courses ranging from (AA) to (FF) to assessment. Students whose CGPA value is at least 2.00 are considered successful on condition that no course has been marked as (FF), (FD). Students whose CGPA values are below 2.00 are considered failure. Starting from the end of the second term, Students’ GPAs have to be at least 1.80 to be able to take classes of the upper terms.
