After the closure of the Institute of Electronic Computing Sciences, that has taken place within the Ege University whose establishment was based on 1955, in 1982; the academic staff of institute were transferred to the department of Computer Science Engineering that was established at Ege University, Faculty of Engineering. In 1982-83 academic year, 25 students, by the pre-registration system, were started the education for the bachelor’s degree. In the creation of department’s education program, the contributions of participants of IV. Information Congress which was held in Izmir during this period, the experiences of the other universities’ faculty members and the experiences and the knowledge of the relevant industry’s staff were used. Education program in Turkish carried out until 1985; by 1985-86 academic year, 30% of education program has started to give in English and the name of the program was changed to “Computer Engineering” instead of “Computer Science Engineering”. Between 1992-1996, the entire program was conducted in English and since 1996-97 academic year, it is carried out mainly Turkish. The students admitted to department must have solid knowledge of English. Until 2009, according to the university’s senate’s decisions, the preparatory training year for English was required of all departments. With the arrangements made in 2009, to continue the necessity of a preparatory class for the students, 30% of the giving lessons in education program have to be conducted in English. In Computer Engineering Department, there are 20 faculty members as 8 professor, 5 associate professors, 7 assistant professors, 3 lecturers and 12 research assistants.
Students who successfully complete the program are awarded the PhD Degree in Computer Engineering.

Acceptance and registration conditions for doctorate programs are stated in the EGE UNIVERSITY GRADUATE EDUCATION REGULATION. The number of students to be admitted to the doctorate program and the qualifications required for candidate students are announced before the beginning of each semester. In this announcement, the application conditions and the deadline, the place and date of the candidates are stated. The equivalence of undergraduate diplomas obtained from abroad must be approved by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK).
EGE UNIVERSITY GRADUATE EDUCATION REGULATION is taken as a basis in the acceptance of students through undergraduate transfer from another department of the same institute at the university or from a graduate program affiliated to another higher education institution's equivalent institute.
Graduation requirements are explained in EGE UNIVERSITY GRADUATE EDUCATION REGULATION.
Computer Engineering Department conducts an education program with the aim of to educate the students in the best way by combining the theory and practice as contemporary engineers who may found a qualified job in national or international organizations or academic area of information technology; analyze the operation of an existing system, find unique and creative solutions by identifying the problems, design and make projects for the new system, to make individual and team work to advance in working life, to express himself verbally and in writing, to have advanced foreign language skills to follow written sources, to open the innovation and self-confidence, as well as who are sensitive to the ages’ problem and with this sensitivity who are fulfilling the job responsibilities, who are able to act in accordance with ethically with acquiring the title of computer engineering based on a solid infrastructure of basic and engineering sciences. Program has compulsory courses related with both of basic engineering sciences and computer engineering. In addition, the education plan, as well as compulsory courses, includes elective courses that students can choose according to their preferences. Thus, Computer Engineering Department trains modern engineers, who can serve as computer engineering profession equipped with the knowledge and skills and who are self-development by following the developments in the field, suitable for team work, questioning and give importance to the ethical values, in all national and international areas.
At the end of doctorate education, students who are successful are awarded the "PhD Degree in Computer Engineering " diploma. Alumni of the department can have jobs like the system analyst, application programmer, usually the director of data processing centers, administrator of database, co-founder and executive engineer, research and development engineer in the computer-aided industrial design and implementations of the systems and so on. In addition, they can also get chance, with researching and making scientific study, for academic progress by contributing to the education as a Lecturer at universities.
Graduates who succesfully completed doctorate degree may apply to both in the same or related disciplines in higher education institutions at home or abroad to get a position in academic staff or to governmental R&D centres to get expert position.

Computer engineering education is given in the historic three-storey independent building which was the only building when Ege University was founded in 1955, with the total covered area of3960 m2, 2 amphis and 5 classrooms. There are a projector, ac omputer, and a board located in all amphis and classrooms. There are six computer labs in the Computer Engineering Department. The computers in the laboratories have operating systems both of Windows and Linux. In addition, all computers in laboratories are equipped with internet access, and antivirus programs. The special software, that are needed by the courses or laboratories which are related with computer applications, are loaded and on the other hand over time the updates, that are appropriate to the technology, are done. In addition, there are courses related to applications done in the electric-electronics laboratory. In Computer Engineering Department, there are 20 faculty members as 8 professor, 5 associate professors, 7 assistant professors, 3 lecturers and 12 research assistants.
