First Cycle Programmes (Bachelor's Degree)

Faculty of Agriculture - Plant Protection - - First Cycle Programme

General Description

The Department was founded in 1956 under the name of Department of Plant Health, being part of the Faculty of Agriculture, at Ege University. The education in the Department was started in the academic year of 1956-1957 and the first graduation was in 1961. It was renamed as the Department of Plant Protection including the subsections of Entomology and Phytopathology in 1983. Entomology subsection in involved in the researches on the identification, taxonomy and biology of insect pests, mites and nematodes of agricultural crops as well as the progress of most appropriate control methods against them. Phytopathology subdivision concentrates on biotic (fungi, bacteria, virus and weeds) and abiotic factors that produce various diseases in the plants and the alternative and new approaches of controlling them. A total of 19 lecturers work (4 professors, 2 Assoc. Prof.,1 associate professor, 4 doctor research assistants, 1 research assistant in the Department of Phytopathology; 3 professors,, 1 associate professor, 1 doctor lecturers, 1 doctor research assistants, and 1 technician (doctorate) in the Department of entomology)

The Bachelor`s Degree in Agricultural Engineering- Plant Protection ( first cycle in Agricultural Engineering- Plant Protection ) is awarded to the graduates who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum.

Bachelor degree

The general requirements explained in “General Admission Requirements” of Information on the Institution part are applied for admission of students. http://ebp.ege.edu.tr/sayfa/ogrenci-kabulu

The rules and regulations for recognition of formal prior learning are well defined. Transfer can be made among the institutions of which equivalency is recognized by Higher Education Council. Also successful vocational school graduates to continue their educaiton to obtain Bachelor’s degrees if they are successful in the selection and the placement examination (DGS, i.e. vertical transfer examination) are admitted. The courses to be taken by these students are determined by the relevant department, on the basis of courses they have completed in the programs from which they have graduated. Recognition of prior non-formal and in-formal learning is at the beginning stage in Turkish Higher Education Institutions. Ege University and hence of the Department is not an exception to this. However, exams of exemption are organised at the start of each year at the University for the courses of English Language and Computer Skills. The students who have completed the proficiencies for these courses on his/her own or through other means, and believe that they have achieved the learning outcomes specified are given the right to take the exemption exam. The students who achieve a passing grade from these exams are held exempt from the related course in the curriculum.

Students must obtain a grade point average of at least 2.00 out of 4.00 and successfully pass all courses on the programme (equivalent to a total of 240 ECTS).

The aim of the program is to educate engineers who can apply modern technology, orient manufacturers and industrial companies, analyze problems in the discipline, can solve them by an scientific way, have knowledge and experience to manufacture safety and high-quality products, assimilate ethic values, innovator, progressive and researcher.

University, ministry, private company

The graduates holding Bachelor’s Degree are eligible to apply to Master’s Degree programmes at national level and /or international level both in the same and in related disciplines.

Students are required to take a mid-term examination and/or complete other assigned projects/homework during the semester and, additionally, are required to take a final examination and/or complete a final project for course evaluation. The assessment for each course is described in detail in “Individual Course Description”. Students must attend classes, practices, and examinations. Students' attendance is followed by the Instructor concerned. For almost all required and technical elective courses there are written examinations, in which most cases student must solve selected problems by calculation. One midterm examination is given during each semester. Dates of midterm examinations are announced by the Department in the first month of each semester. In addition to midterm examinations and other work, students are required to take a final examination. Final examinations are held at the appropriate place and hour as decided and announced by the Department. Students are given a make-up examination for any examination which they have not attended if it is accepted by the Faculty Administrative Committee that there exist genuine and valid reasons for this. The semester grades are determined by adding fourty percent of the midterm exam and sixty percent of the final exam grade. The type and contribution of the educational activities such as reports, homework, quizzes, seminar presentations or individual oral discussions, and performance in laboratory work on the assessment are announced by the instructor at the beginning of the semester. In the new assessment system which has been introduced since the academic year of 2004-2005, the semester grades are assessed through Relative Assessment System. The success states of the students are specified by Grade Point Averages (GPA) and Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) computed at the end of each term. (GPA) is the weighted grade average of the term the student is enrolled in. CGPA is the weighted grade average of the students computed by considering all the courses in the course plan of the enrolled department or program starting from the entrance to the university. (GPA) and (CGPA) are computed with the weighted grade averages. Weighted grade average is obtained by dividing the sum of the product of course credits and the weight coefficients equivalent of the letter grades to the total credit. Both (GPA) and CGPA are determined by adding all the grades students get from credit courses ranging from (AA) to (FF) to assessment. Students whose CGPA value is at least 2.00 are considered successful on condition that no course has been marked as (FF), (FD). Students whose CGPA values are below 2.00 are considered failure. Starting from the end of the second term, Students’ GPAs have to be at least 1.80 to be able to take classes of the upper terms.

Graduation requirements are explained in the section “Qualification Requirements and Regulations” .
