Master Degree in Medicine
High School Diploma and placement through a centralized national university placement examination arranged by OSYM (Higher Education Council Student Selection and Placement Center) are required to admit the Faculty of Medicine.
Recognition of prior non-formal and in-formal learning is at the beginning stage of Turkish Higher Education Institutions. Ege University and hence of the Faculty of Medicine is not an exception to this. However, exams of exemption are organized at the start of each academic year at the Faculty for the courses of English Language and Computer Skills. The students who have completed the proficiencies for these courses on his/her own or through other means, and believe that they have achieved the learning outcomes specified are given right to take the exemption exams. The students who achieve a passing grade from these exams are held exempt from the related course in the curriculum.
It is a one tier programme. The education period is six years in the Faculty of Medicine. The achievement of a total of 360 ECTS credits is required for qualification as a medical doctor.
Faculty curriculum is planned to implement the basic requirements for the application of modern medical practice. The programme runs annually, but not in semester bases. The curriculum of Ege University Faculty of Medicine consists of six phases: Phase 1: Introduction to medical sciences This 12-week phase comprises basic concepts like the components, anatomy, life cycle of the cell, the biologic equilibrium of the body and homeostasis, which will form the basis for understanding normal structure and function. Besides, the students are introduced to skills training, the use of computer technology in medical education and daily life, and concepts like promotion of health, ethics and legal issues. Visits to healthcare centers also start in this phase. Phase 2: Normal structure and function In this phase, students are introduced to the normal structure and function of the body with an organ system-based, horizontally and vertically integrated curriculum. It consists of four 8-to13-week-long blocks that are composed of related systems. Phase 3: Introduction to pathology and clinical sciences This 14-week phase consists of basic pathology concepts, including inflammation, infection, infectious agents, oncogenesis and of basic pharmacology. It also includes theoretical and bedside sessions on taking the patients' history and performing physical examination. Phase 4: System pathologies The program in this phase is composed of four organ-system-based blocks structured similarly to Phase 2. The duration of blocks is 6-11 weeks and the pathologic processes are introduced with special emphasis on clinical relevance and relations. Phase 5: Clinical sciences (clerkships) The phase consists of 6 integrated clinical clerkship courses each lasting 14 weeks and the clerkship programme lasts a total of 84 weeks in years 4 and 5. Phase 5 aims to assure that the students fully learn the necessary information for the management of priority health problems in the related field, to provide the setting for developing the skills for clinical problem solving, differential diagnosis and interpersonal communication. The courses are as follows: Internal Medicine Clerkship Course, General and Urogenital Surgery Clerkship Course, Cardiopulmonary System and Infection Clerkship Course, Pediatrics Clerkship Course, Skeletal-Muscular-Nervous System and Behavioural Sceinces Clerkship Course, Sensorial System Clerkship Course. Phase 6: Internship The aim in the last phase of the curriculum is for the students to practice medicine under supervision. Similar to the junior residents, they actively participate in the patients' care, treatment and follow-up and are evaluated according to their knowledge, skills and attitudes in the process. No formal tests assessing knowledge are given. The phase lasts 52 weeks. In the medical curriculum, besides horizontal integration trainings in the form of vertical integration continue in areas such as public health applications, ethics-law, practical skills, professional foreign language, ultrasound education. The training program in the simulated patient laboratory starts in the second grade and it is an exemplary model. Special Study Modules (SSM), which allow students to work face-to-face with faculty members in their fields of interest, are compulsory in the second and third grades. Basic and professional foreign language courses aims to enable our students to follow the international literature. Students also participates in the Research Education Program (REP) voluntarily at the end of the first year to train as a researcher and this is also a unique model of our curriculum. The main objective of the faculty with this curriculum is to raise general practitioners who are fully-equipped with knowledge, skills and attitudes to combine his/her medical proficiency with recent developments in science and society for the management of a high-quality medical care in the fight against community health problems; who have the enthusiasm to learn more and perform better; and finally, who are capable of and proficient enough to contribute to scientific development worldwide.
In order to complete the two-year obligatory work for the government, the graduates of Faculty of Medicine enter a kura organized by the Turkish Ministry of Health and are recruited in the public health units at the primary health care or in the emergency services of governmental hospitals. A Medical Residency Examination (TUS) is held twice a year and the graduates who are successful to get a post announced by OSYM (Higher Education Council Student Selection and Placement Center) are recruited in the research and education hospitals of the universities or the Turkish Ministry of Health.
Graduates with the Medical Doctor degree may apply to Doctor of Philosophy programs in the basic medical sciences and Residency Training programs in the internal and surgical medical sciences.
Students must attend classes, practicals and examinations. Students' attendance is followed by the block committees in the first three years and departments giving clerkship training. The assessment system in the first three years of the curriculum (the preclinical years) is composed of three tools: 1. Examinations at the end of the blocks: There is one written examination made up of multiple choice quiestions (MCQ) to test the theoretical content of the basic science courses. The skills training is assessed during/at the end of each session. The practicals (physiology, biochemistry, anatomy, histology, biophysics) are assessed either during the sessions or at the end of the block with an objective-structured clinical examination (OSCE, the decision is made by the block committees). 2. Examinations during the block: There are short quizzes (each made up of 5-20 short-answer, fill-in-the-blank questions) which are designed based on the learning objectives for the related themes and which take place every three weeks. A feedback session is planned immediately following theses quizzes. 3. A progress test started being implemented in the year 2003-2004 and takes place three times a year. An independent committee composed of faculty members from the basic and clinical science departments and from The Department of Medical Education is in charge of the preparation, implementation and evaluation of these tests. The students' final score, to which all the above-mentioned tests contribute, should be above 60/100. Those who stay below this level are required to take a make-up exam for the block(s) which they failed. If they also fail these latter examinations, they retake the full school year. In Phase 5, the students take 2-5 oral examination in each course and a written test at the end of each clerkship. The written test includes MCQ's assessing the knowledge of the students and it has 60% contribution to the students's final grade. The oral examinations aim to evaluate the students' clinical problem solving skills and is thus performed at the bedside and/or using virtual cases. The student has to get 60/100 at each oral exam and the contribution of the average of oral examination notes to final grade is 45%. A supervisor is attained for each student in the departments. The students are required to score above 60/100 to pass; otherwise they take a make-up examination.
Successful completion of 360 ECTS credits for a six-year educational period is required for graduation. However, the graduates receive their diploma only after approval by the Ministry of Health following the completion of a two-year obligatory work for the government at a primary health care center.
