General Description

Department of Sociology at Faculty of Letters, Ege University was founded as a department of Behavioral Sciences in 1976. The department has restructured as current situation. It’s one of the oldest Turkey with 4 major field of study and 5 lecturers. The department has been accepting postgraduate students since 1982. The aims of department are to provide ground for research; to develop strategies to create research groups in education; create strategies for national and international collaborations; cooperate with public institutions on different levels.

The Bachelor`s Degree in Sociology ( first cycle in Sociology ) is awarded to the graduates who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum

The requirements for admission of students are to be found in the part of "About Ege University" in the sub-category of "General Admission".

The rules and regulations for recognition of formal prior learning are well defined. Transfer can be made among the institutions of which equivalency is recognized by Higher Education Council. Also successful vocational school graduates to continue their educaiton to obtain Bachelor’s degrees if they are successful in the selection and the placement examination (DGS, i.e. vertical transfer examination) are admitted. The courses to be taken by these students are determined by the relevant department, on the basis of courses they have completed in the programs from which they have graduated. Recognition of prior non-formal and in-formal learning is at the beginning stage in Turkish Higher Education Institutions. Ege University and hence of the Department is not an exception to this. However, exams of exemption are organised at the start of each year at the University for the courses of English Language and Computer Skills. The students who have completed the proficiencies for these courses on his/her own or through other means, and believe that they have achieved the learning outcomes specified are given the right to take the exemption exam. The students who achieve a passing grade from these exams are held exempt from the related course in the curriculum.

Students must obtain a grade point average of at least 2.00 out of 4.00 and successfully pass all courses on the programme (equivalent to a total of 240 ECTS).

Informing undergraduate students about development of fundemental sociological theories, contemporary approaches and findings; improving skills of undergraduates to make social scientefic researches and applications; systematic data collection on social structure and the problems of Turkey and particularly The Aegean reagion, developing capacity of undergraduates in order to make them enabled to continue to graduate programs, trainin gradute studends both in theorical and applied sociology; training future teaching staff for the academy and training future researchers and specialists for the puclic and private sectors are the main purposesses of the department

By getting the sufficient grades in KPSS, the grads can be employed in a variety of state institutions. By getting educational science formation, they can be employed as Phil-Psy-Soc teachers both in private and public schools.

The graduates holding Bachelor’s Degree are eligible to apply to Master’s Degree programmes at national level and /or international level both in the same and in related disciplines.

Although overwhelmingly theoretical education is provided, students can find opportunities in gain experience through study in resaearch projects of the staff. Meanwhile, students can do internship in private or public institutions, depending on their wills. They can complete a part of their education in any European university through LLP/Erasmus Programme.

11 They can collect data related to any social problem, analyze the data, and provide solutions
