History

The Department of Landscape Architecture was established in 1976 and entered into the educational program in 1977-78. Landscape architecture is the art and science of analysis, planning, design, management, preservation and rehabilitation of the land. The scope of the profession includes site planning and development, environmental restoration, sustainable design, urban planning, park and recreation planning, regional planning, and historic preservation. Practitioners share a commitment of achieving a balance between conservation, use and management of natural-cultural resources in the country. In addition to education and training activities; project studies for planning and design in the revolving fund, preparing technical reports about different topics, provision of consultation and expertise upon natural sites and environmental issues, conservation and improvement of natural and cultural resources, activities to create community awareness and sensitivity about the protection of environmental resources through radio and television programs, public meetings and conferences, students’ design projects for different purposes especially for schools and military organizations are being materialized at the department.

Qualification Awarded

The Bachelor`s Degree in Landscape Architecture (first cycle in Landscape Architecture) is awarded to the graduates who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum.

The general requirements explained in “General Admission Requirements” of Information on the Institution part are applied for admission of students.

Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

The rules and regulations for recognition of formal prior learning are well defined. Transfer can be made among the institutions of which equivalency is recognized by Higher Education Council. Also successful vocational school graduates to continue their educaiton to obtain Bachelor’s degrees if they are successful in the selection and the placement examination (DGS, i.e. vertical transfer examination) are admitted. The courses to be taken by these students are determined by the relevant department, on the basis of courses they have completed in the programs from which they have graduated. Recognition of prior non-formal and in-formal learning is at the beginning stage in Turkish Higher Education Institutions. Ege University and hence of the Department is not an exception to this. However, exams of exemption are organised at the start of each year at the University for the courses of English Language and Computer Skills. The students who have completed the proficiencies for these courses on his/her own or through other means, and believe that they have achieved the learning outcomes specified are given the right to take the exemption exam. The students who achieve a passing grade from these exams are held exempt from the related course in the curriculum.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Students must obtain a grade point average of at least 2.00 out of 4.00 and successfully pass all courses on the programme (equivalent to a total of 240 ECTS).

Profile of The Programme

The aims of the Bachelor Degree in Landscape Architecture are to enable the student; to incorporate the knowledge of physical planning, design, ecology and art into issues and problem of natural and cultural landscapes; To analyze the landscape architectural savvy issues/problems in the fields of spatial planning, design, reclamation and site engineering, and develop sustainable solutions; to have a professional responsibility and the ethical values; to take initiative and study independently; to appreciate the value of self-development and lifelong learning.

Access to Further Studies

The graduates holding Bachelor’s Degree are eligible to apply to Master’s Degree programmes at national level and /or international level both in the same and in related disciplines.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Students are required to take a mid-term examination and/or complete other assigned projects/homework during the semester and, additionally, are required to take a final examination for course evaluation.The assessment for each course is described in detail in “Individual Course Description”. Students must attend classes, practices and examinations. Students` attendance is followed by the Instructor concerned. The midterm examinations are compacted and given in the ninth week of the semester. One midterm examination is given during each semester. Dates of midterm examinations are announced by the Department in the first month of the semester. In addition to midterm examinations and other work, students are required to take a final examination. Final examinations are held at the appropriate place and hour as decided and announced by the Department. The semester grades are determined by adding fourty percent of the midterm exam and sixty percent of the final exam grade. The type and contribution of the educational activities such as reports, homeworks, quizzes, seminar presentations or individual oral discussions, and performance in laboratory work on the assessment are announced by the instructor at the beginning of the semester. In the new assessment system which has been introduced since the academic year of 2004-2005, the semester grades are assessed through Relative Assessment System. The success states of the students are specified by Grade Point Averages (GPA) and Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) computed at the end of each term. (GPA) is the weighted grade average of the term the student is enrolled in. CGPA is the weighted grade average of the students computed by considering all the courses in the course plan of the enrolled department or program starting from the entrance to the university. (GPA) and (CGPA) are computed with the weighted grade averages. Weighted grade average is obtained by dividing the sum of the product of course credits and the weight coefficients equivalent of the letter grades to the total credit. Both (GPA) and CGPA are determined by adding all the grades students get from credit courses ranging from (AA) to (FF) to assessment. Students whose CGPA value is at least 2.00 are considered successful on condition that no course has been marked as (FF), (FD). Students whose CGPA values are below 2.00 are considered failure. Starting from the end of the second term, Students’ GPAs have to be at least 1.80 to be able to take classes of the upper terms. For the assessment of success of the students enrolled in before the academic year of 2004-2005, if the final exam and the semester grades exceed 60 or be equal to 60 , the student will be successful from this course.

The basic facilities for education, research and other activities are; 2 classrooms, 2 design studios, 1 computer room, 1 library-meeting room and an interior garden.
