First Cycle Programmes (Bachelor's Degree)

Faculty of Engineering - Electrical and Electronics Engineering - - First Cycle Programme

General Description

The Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department was established in 1994. The Department offers undergraduate education to about 550 students, and graduate programs to about 70 master students. The study at the department is scheduled to four years, excluding the first year for English preparation. Students not comprehensive in English must attend an one‑yea1r Preparatory Program offered by the School of Foreign Languages. Most of the courses are offered in Turkish. The department at present has 19 full-time faculty members. The full-time faculty members are 8 professors, 6 associate professor and 5 assistant professors. All of the faculty members are involved in reserach studies focusing more on priority areas in the strategic plan of university and development plans.

The Bachelor`s Degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering ( first cycle in Electrical and Electronic Engineering) is awarded to the graduates who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum.

The general requirements explained in “General Admission Requirements” of Information on the Institution part are applied for admission of students.

The rules and regulations for recognition of formal prior learning are well defined. Transfer can be made among the institutions of which equivalency is recognized by Higher Education Council. Also successful vocational school graduates to continue their educaiton to obtain Bachelor’s degrees if they are successful in the selection and the placement examination (DGS, i.e. vertical transfer examination) are admitted. The courses to be taken by these students are determined by the relevant department, on the basis of courses they have completed in the programs from which they have graduated. Recognition of prior non-formal and in-formal learning is at the beginning stage in Turkish Higher Education Institutions. Ege University and hence of the Department is not an exception to this. However, exams of exemption are organised at the start of each year at the University for the courses of English Language and Computer Skills. The students who have completed the proficiencies for these courses on his/her own or through other means, and believe that they have achieved the learning outcomes specified are given the right to take the exemption exam. The students who achieve a passing grade from these exams are held exempt from the related course in the curriculum.

Students must obtain a grade point average of at least 2.00 out of 4.00 and successfully pass all courses on the programme (equivalent to a total of 240 ECTS).

Our students have practice oriented bachelor science education using their qualified mathematics and science background for electrical and electronics engineering. After graduation: * They can find suitable jobs in national or international work places in the first year after graduation. * They can provide important contribution by developing themselves in industry, research centers and universities. * They can prominence in their work positions using their scientific, social and job knowledge and skills or developing themselves in different fields. The programs in Electrical and Electronic Engineering are designed with the purpose of preparing students both for a career in the Electrical and Electronic Engineering profession and for further studies in applied and theoretical research. The first six semesters of the undergraduate program are common to all Electrical and Electronic Engineering students with the aim of preparing the student to choose an appropriate specialization option. The selection of the specialization field at the beginning of the seventh semester is made under the supervision of the department advisors In the undergraduate program the following specialization options are available to the students: * Electronics and Communication Systems * Power Systems and Control In the graduate programs, students are offered courses and research opportunities in the following specialization areas: * Electronics * Electric Machinery, Control and Power Electronics * Digital and Fiber-Optic Communications * Image Processing * Biomedical Signal Processing * Biophotonic * Microwave * Renewable Energy * Power systems, Energy Currently, in the department, there are 8 professors, 6 associate professors, 5 assistant professors, 9 research assistants, 1 expert engineer, 1 computer expert, 1 electronic technician manager, 1 student affairs secretary, 1 department secretary, 3 support workers, and totally 36 person are working for education, teaching and research activities. Electrical and Electronics Engineering department targeted three fields, which are determined by Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK) and State Planning Organization (DPT). The first field is the design of the systems for producing, distributing and using the energy. In the department; energy, electric machines, automatic control and power electronics courses are taught and researches are continuing on this field. The second field is the telecommunication and knowledge technologies. For this aim; electronic, optoelectronic, magneto electronic, electronic telecommunication, data communication, computer networks, fiber optic systems courses are taught and researches are continuing on this field by collaborating with foreign universities. The third field is about signal processing, artificial intelligence (Fuzzy Logic Systems, Artificial Neural Networks), embedded systems and biomedical engineering. In this field, related courses are given and researches are continuing. In the department, Master of Science and Doctorate education are provided also. In that sense, teaching staff are prepared for the universities, which are located in Aegean region (ÖYP program). Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK), IndustrialcSupporting Program supported projects and collaborative projects with industry are carried out. Our department was accredited by Association for Evaluation and Accreditation of Engineering Programs (MUDEK).

Our graduates work for worldwide universities and research centers. They work as research/teaching assistants while pursuing their graduate studies Graduates of Electrical and Electronics Engineering Programs work for companies in the electrical, electronics and telecommunication industries, national and international companies, Radio and TV Broadcasting companies, R&D, production and marketing departments of internet services related organizations and health care industry. Most of our graduates pursue graduate studies at prestigious universities. Still many graduates work in key positions for companies such as Vestel Elektronik, Türk Telekom, Turkcell, Aria, Ericsson Turkey, Philips, Tubitak, TAI, Aselsan, Renault, Beko.

The graduates holding Bachelor’s Degree are eligible to apply to Master’s Degree programmes at national level and /or international level both in the same and in related disciplines.

Students must attend classes, practices and examinations. Students` attendance is followed by the Instructor concerned. For almost all required and technical elective courses there are written examinations, in which most cases student must solve selected problems by calculation. One midterm examination is given during each semester. Dates of midterm examinations are announced by the Department in the first month of the semester. In addition to midterm examinations and other work, students are required to take a final examination. Final examinations are held at the appropriate place and hour as decided and announced by the Department. Students are given a make-up examination for any examination which they have not attended if it is accepted by the Faculty Administrative Comittee that there exist genuine and valid reasons for this. The semester grades are determined by adding fourty percent of the midterm exam and sixty percent of the final exam grade. The type and contribution of the educational activities such as reports, homeworks, quizzes, seminar presentations or individual oral discussions, and performance in laboratory work on the assessment are announced by the instructor at the beginning of the semester. In the new assessment system which has been introduced since the academic year of 2004-2005, the semester grades are assessed through Relative Assessment System. The success states of the students are specified by Grade Point Averages (GPA) and Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) computed at the end of each term. (GPA) is the weighted grade average of the term the student is enrolled in. CGPA is the weighted grade average of the students computed by considering all the courses in the course plan of the enrolled department or program starting from the entrance to the university. (GPA) and (CGPA) are computed with the weighted grade averages. Weighted grade average is obtained by dividing the sum of the product of course credits and the weight coefficients equivalent of the letter grades to the total credit. Both (GPA) and CGPA are determined by adding all the grades students get from credit courses ranging from (AA) to (FF) to assessment. Students whose CGPA value is at least 2.00 are considered successful on condition that no course has been marked as (FF), (FD). Students whose CGPA values are below 2.00 are considered failure. Starting from the end of the second term, Students’ GPAs have to be at least 1.80 to be able to take classes of the upper terms. For the assessment of success of the students enrolled in before the academic year of 2004-2005, if the final exam and the semester grades exceed 60 or be equal to 60 , the student will be successful from this course. Courses which do not require midterm and/or final examinations are determined by the course teacher. Under these circumstances, the semester grade is given by evaluating the work done throughout the semester.

Graduation requirements are explained in the section “Qualification Requirements and Regulations” .
