General Description

The Department of German Language and Literature at Ege University aims to enable students to reach their full intellectual potential through a liberal arts education. Studying literature, language, and related humanistic disciplines equips students with the necessary skills to understand not only the ideas, attitudes, and values of their own culture but those of others as well. The Department of German Language and Literature was established in 1976 in response to Turkey's growing need for education that conforms to international standards. The objective of the program is to develop students' ability to make critical analysis in many areas of social sciences and to be able to express their ideas orally and in written form. As the importance of borders and boundaries has diminished in this era of internationalization and the Internet, it has seemed appropriate to bring the related disciplines of literary and cultural studies together. In an age of globalization, the department offers a wide choice of courses offering insight into both the American and the international agenda. The result of this curriculum is to encourage a comparative perspective on the world.

The Bachelor`s Degree in German Language and Literature ( first cycle in German Language and Literature ) is awarded to the graduates who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum.

The general requirements explained in “General Admission Requirements” of Information on the Institution part are applied for admission of students.

The rules and regulations for recognition of formal prior learning are well defined. Transfer can be made among the institutions of which equivalency is recognized by Higher Education Council. Also successful vocational school graduates to continue their educaiton to obtain Bachelor’s degrees if they are successful in the selection and the placement examination (DGS, i.e. vertical transfer examination) are admitted. The courses to be taken by these students are determined by the relevant department, on the basis of courses they have completed in the programs from which they have graduated. Recognition of prior non-formal and in-formal learning is at the beginning stage in Turkish Higher Education Institutions. Ege University and hence of the Department is not an exception to this. However, exams of exemption are organised at the start of each year at the University for the courses of English Language and Computer Skills. The students who have completed the proficiencies for these courses on his/her own or through other means, and believe that they have achieved the learning outcomes specified are given the right to take the exemption exam. The students who achieve a passing grade from these exams are held exempt from the related course in the curriculum.

Students must obtain a grade point average of at least 2.00 out of 4.00 and successfully pass all courses on the programme (equivalent to a total of 240 ECTS).

The department of German Language and Literature aims to educate philologists who have adopted ethical values, who are aware of the realities of the world, who have adopted the importance of life long learning, equipped with the knowledge, skills and approaches necessary to serve in all areas of German philology. The BA programme consisting of a total of 8 semesters in 4 years, aims to provide students with an advanced level of language skills, core knowledge in literary terms, literary history, literary theory and criticism, culture, and vocational competence in language, literature, criticism and cultural studies.

The graduates enjoy productive careers in the public and private sectors of Turkey and countries abroad, in such fields as business finance, government, international relations, education, the media, technology, and the arts, to name only a few.

The graduates holding Bachelor’s Degree are eligible to apply to Master’s Degree programmes at national level and /or international level both in the same and in related disciplines.

Students must attend classes, practices and examinations. Students' attendance is followed by the Instructor concerned. For almost all required and technical elective courses there are written examinations, in which most cases student must solve selected problems by calculation. One midterm examination is given during each semester. Dates of midterm examinations are announced by the Department in the first month of the semester. In addition to midterm examinations and other work, students are required to take a final examination. Final examinations are held at the appropriate place and hour as decided and announced by the Department. Students are given a make-up examination for any examination which they have not attended if it is accepted by the Faculty Administrative Comittee that there exist genuine and valid reasons for this. The semester grades are determined by adding fourty percent of the midterm exam and sixty percent of the final exam grade. The type and contribution of the educational activities such as reports, homeworks, quizzes, seminar presentations or individual oral discussions, and performance in laboratory work on the assessment are announced by the instructor at the beginning of the semester. In the new assessment system which has been introduced since the academic year of 2004-2005, the semester grades are assessed through Relative Assessment System. The success states of the students are specified by Grade Point Averages (GPA) and Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) computed at the end of each term. (GPA) is the weighted grade average of the term the student is enrolled in. CGPA is the weighted grade average of the students computed by considering all the courses in the course plan of the enrolled department or program starting from the entrance to the university. (GPA) and (CGPA) are computed with the weighted grade averages. Weighted grade average is obtained by dividing the sum of the product of course credits and the weight coefficients equivalent of the letter grades to the total credit. Both (GPA) and CGPA are determined by adding all the grades students get from credit courses ranging from (AA) to (FF) to assessment. Students whose CGPA value is at least 2.00 are considered successful on condition that no course has been marked as (FF), (FD). Students whose CGPA values are below 2.00 are considered failure. Starting from the end of the second term, Students’ GPAs have to be at least 1.80 to be able to take classes of the upper terms. Under these circumstances, the semester grade is given by evaluating the work done throughout the semester. In the nontechnical optional courses, students and lecturer arrange the method of evaluation. The student’s success in these courses is awarded by “successful” in the transcript of records.

Key Learning Outcomes

1 Be able to develop the ability to understand, assimilate and discuss the concepts and thoughts, facts and approaches, critical methods related to German Language and Literature.
2 Be able to examine different periods of German literary and cultural history in itself and in comparison with other periods and to make inferences in the context of their own language, literature and cultural history.
3 To understand the basic concepts, theories and methods of linguistics and sub-branches of linguistics (phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics), to be able to analyze linguistic texts, to associate this information with literature and cultural studies.
4 To gain awareness about the German language, culture and cultural history and to associate the acquired knowledge with other world languages, culture and literature, especially Turkish language culture and literature.
5 Be able to read language, literature, culture and art products/texts (novels, poetry, stories, reviews, cinema, magazines, newspapers, television, advertisement, theater, painting, sculpture, music, architecture, folklore, sports) with cultural criticism approaches and and to be able to analyze the evolving and changing discourses related to them.
6 Be able to use German and terminology competently in various written and oral communication situations.
7 Be able to analyze literary texts by using the knowledge and skills acquired in the field, to express them orally or in writing using scientific writing techniques.
8 Be able to work independently and/or in a group by gaining ethical work responsibility, knowledge and skills in scientific research and projects.
9 Be able to use information technologies competently by gaining the skills of using materials in learning processes and making appropriate choices in line with the content-material connection.
10 Be able to apply the knowledge and skills acquired in the field in interdisciplinary studies.
11 Be able to competently translate different types of texts, especially literary texts, taking into account social and cultural characteristics.
12 To learn a second foreign language other than Turkish and German at a basic level and communicate it verbally and in writing.
13 Be able to transfer the knowledge, critical perspective and flexibility gained by the German Language and Literature program to other areas of life and professional levels (teaching, lecturer, guidance, interpreting, international relations, editorial etc.)
