General Description

When Social Sciences Faculty started to instruction on 1976-1977, one of the first departments was Histoy-Geography-Archaeology department. History department took place in this structure as a discipline, started to instruction on 1976 on undergraduate degree and on 1977 graduate degree. Prof. Dr. Mükemmer Umsan ANABOLU, who was working in Fine Arts Faculty then, was appointed as the first head of department. On 1979 with the proposal of faculty council and approval of the senate, History Department, Geography Department and Archaeology Department were founded separately. Prof. Dr. Nuri KARAKAŞ is head of the History Department.

The Bachelor`s Degree in History ( first cycle in History) is awarded to the graduates who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum

The general requirements explained in “General Admission Requirements” of Information on the Institution part are applied for admission of students.

The rules and regulations for recognition of formal prior learning are well defined. Transfer can be made among the institutions of which equivalency is recognized by Higher Education Council. Also successful vocational school graduates to continue their educaiton to obtain Bachelor’s degrees if they are successful in the selection and the placement examination (DGS, i.e. vertical transfer examination) are admitted. The courses to be taken by these students are determined by the relevant department, on the basis of courses they have completed in the programs from which they have graduated. Recognition of prior non-formal and in-formal learning is at the beginning stage in Turkish Higher Education Institutions. Ege University and hence of the Department is not an exception to this. However, exams of exemption are organised at the start of each year at the University for the courses of English Language and Computer Skills. The students who have completed the proficiencies for these courses on his/her own or through other means, and believe that they have achieved the learning outcomes specified are given the right to take the exemption exam. The students who achieve a passing grade from these exams are held exempt from the related course in the curriculum.

Students must obtain a grade point average of at least 2.00 out of 4.00 and successfully pass all courses on the programme (equivalent to a total of 240 ECTS).

History department is carrying out an education program in order to train historians. On our course programs, along with compulsory courses, there are selective courses as well in order to give students the chance of selecting courses suitable for the fields in which he/she wants to get specialized. Besides, among our objectives is provide qualified staff for all service areas in relevant fields or communication. These are public utility, local and regional administration, personnel management, journalism, international organizations, tourism, administration and evaluation of cultural heritage, archives, museums, libraries and lateral branches of these.

1 To educate historians who know the history of the world and our country, who can comprehend the problems of our age in a multi-dimensional perspective,
2 who can carry out their studies individually, make independent decisions and organise complex historical information in a coherent manner,
3 who have the ability to follow the current developments in the field, can benefit from information sources in Turkish or foreign language and have the necessary technological equipment to access these sources,
4 who can express their ideas verbally and in writing within the framework of professional ethics, can evaluate historical facts according to the conditions of the period.

Graduates, who have pedagogic formation and obtain sufficient score in KPSS (Civil Servant Election Exam), can be assigned history teacher by the Ministry of the National Education. Besides, there are employment opportunity in public utility, local and regional administration, personnel management, journalism, international organizations, tourism, administration and evaluation of cultural heritage, archives, museums, libraries and lateral branches of these.

The graduates holding Bachelor’s Degree are eligible to apply to Master’s Degree programmes at national level and /or international level both in the same and in related disciplines.

In history department there is one midterm exam and one final exam, total of two exams per term. Mid term exam affects final grade % 40, and final exam affect it % 60.

There are 11 professors, 4 associate professors, 2 assistant professors, 1 lecturer, 1 research assistant doctor and 3 research assistants in our department. There are projectors in the classrooms of our department. Our department has a private archive and library.

2 To be able to establish and evaluate the relationship between current events or processes and the past.
3 To be able to gain knowledge and skills to use the tools of other humanitary studies (such as literary criticism, statistics, art history, archeology, anthropology, paleography, law, sociology, philosophy, geography and psychology).
4 To be able to explain and evaluate the political, military, social, economic, cultural, scientific and technological developments from a historical perspective on a global, regional or local scale.
5 Having detailed knowledge in one or more era(s) of history.
6 To gain the ability to identify sources of information and make use of them appropriately (such as bibliography, documents, oral testimonies).
7 Being able to organize complicated historical information consistently.
8 Being aware of the necessity of following the current developments in the field, being able to browse and use resources in Turkish and foreign languages ​​(library and informatics) and gain the habit of lifelong learning.
9 Ability to read historical texts or original documents in their own language, to understand and use texts in their source language; gain the ability to summarize or transcribe and catalog information in an appropriate form.
10 To be able to gain the ability to write in one's own language by using the various ecoles of historiography correctly.
11 Ability to express ideas verbally, in writing, clearly and concisely, with the ability to work individually and to make independent decisions.
12 Ability to evaluate and interpret historical events and facts according to the conditions of the period.
13 To be able to evaluate and explain the processes of change in human history.
